SANFORD, Florida - The Raider Softball Team played a doubleheader on Tuesday at Boombah Soldier's Creek, the sight of the NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA State Championship May 3-6. If Tuesday's results are any indication, SSC could do well in May.
Game 1 SSC 4 SFSC 2
The Raiders (13-2) broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the 4th inning and added an insurance run in the next to top the Panthers ( 4-9) 4-2 in the first game of the DH. Kyra Gipson ran her record to 5-1 as she scattered 7 hits and struck out 2. SFSC scored a run in the first, but the Raiders answered back with 2 of their own. Ashe-Leigh Wells led off with a walk and stole second. Meghan Sexton drove her in with a double to rightfield, and Chelsea Peace hit a single to plate Sexton and put the Raiders up 2-1. The Panthers took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 3rd, after a lead-off double and 2 miscues by the Raiders defense. Kayla Casella knocked in the go-ahead run with a 2 out single to right in the bottom of the 4th, and Haley Hinz added a run scoring single in the next inning to put the Raiders up 4-2. Sexton ( 2-4, 2B, RBI), Peace ( 2-3, 2B, RBI) and Hinz ( 2-3, RBI) led the offense with 2 hits each.
Game 2 SSC 21 SFSC 1
The offense pounded out 17 hits in the shortened run-ruled 22-1 win. After scoring 2 runs in the first inning, the Raiders sent 15 batters to the plate in the second and scored 9 runs and again in the third batted around and plated 11 runs. 11 different Raider players collected hits in the game, including Gabby Ekberg who hit her first collegiate homerun. She was 2-2 and drove in 4 runs. SSC had 7 doubles, including one by Kasey Trickey who was 3-3 and drove in 3 runs. Taylor Langworthy also had a 3 RBI night for the Raiders. Kyra Gipson and Meghan Sexton also had doubles in the game and collected 2 RBI's each.
Gabi Lopresti (3-0) picked up the win the circle. She gave up 1 run on 4 hits and struck out 3.
**Chelsea Peace (upper right) was named the FCSAA Softball Player of the Week on Tuesday. Peace batted .632 (12-for-19) with eight runs scored, seven doubles, one home run, six RBI and one stolen base in six games during the voting period, the Raiders were 6-0 over that span.
