WINTER HAVEN, Florida - Seminole State (7-2) swept Polk State College (0-8) in a doubleheader on Tuesday. SSC had 17 hits in the 2 games, including 4 doubles and 2 homeruns.  

Game 1   SSC 5   PSC 0

Kyra Gipson (3-1) pitched a complete game shutout in the 5-0 win. She scattered 6 hits and struck out 5. The Raiders struck early, scoring their 5 runs by the 3rd inning.  Chelsea Peace, Kelsi Smith and Haley Hinz, each drove in a run in the first inning.  In the top of the 3rd, Breanna LaClair hit a one out double down the leftfield line, and after a single by Gipson Kasey Trickey knocked in both runners with a single to leftcenter, making the score 5-0. Gipson and the defense were solid the rest of the game as the Eagles only got 2 runners in scoring positon.

Game 2   SSC 13   PSC 2

Game two was quickly decided in the first two innings as they Raiders scored 10 runs to jump out to a 10-0 lead.  3 more runs were added in the top of the 4th and the game was called after 5 innings with the 8 run mercy rule in effect.  Kiana East (2-1) picked up the win in the circle, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits.  The Eagles scored their only runs in the bottom of the 4th, after 2 lead-off singles were followed by 2 infield errors, allowing the runs to score.

The Raiders pounded out 10 hits, highlighted by Aimee Oglesby’s grandslam in the 2nd inning.  Oglesby drove in 5 of the teams runs in the game.  Payton Germer also went long for the Raiders, as she hit a 2 run homer in the top of the 4th.  Oglesby and Chelsea Peace each had 2 hits, while 6 other players added a hit.  

The Eagles will return the game for a visit on Friday for SSC's home opener at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. The Raiders will host HIllsborough (6-4) Saturday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Dr. Georgia Lorenz

Athlete Spotlight Image
Dr. Lorenz is the new President for Seminole State. She started her tenure on August 1, 2018 and is only the third president in the history of the College. Dr. Lorenz has a Ph.D. from USC, an M.S. in Education from Northwestern and was a student-athlete at Stanford University.
