SANFORD, Florida - #buildingRaiders is the social media handle for Seminole State Athletics and it has multiple uses and meanings; building the individual's body and mind in preparation for competition and life; (re)building the Wellness/Athletics Center; and certainly building an Athletics Department that will be a source of pride for Seminole State College and the community.  Adding Women's and Men's Cross Country is one more component in building Raider Athletics. Earlier this week, Dr. E. Ann McGee and her Executive Team approved the addition.

Dr. Jan Lloyd, Assistant Vice President for Student Development, stated, "It's been a number of years since Seminole State has expanded athletics. Thanks to the leadership of our (new) Athletics Director, Kurt Esser, we are excited to be adding men's and women's cross country. There are many talented area high school students who can now compete locally on the collegiate level."

This is great news for the central Florida running community, for the Seminole Striders and Rollers Club on campus and for the area high school cross country programs. The new coach will not only lead 20 new Raider Student-Athletes but also have oversight of the new Striders and Rollers wellness club and be charged with organizing running events for the community.

In 2017, Esser met with Seminole County High School Athletic Directors to gain their perspective on the potential addition of sports at Seminole State. Cross Country was at the top of the list. "We believe this is an excellent sport to add, we can increase the number of great student-athletes and maintain our fiscal responsibility," said Esser. "It is exciting to have such great support from our college leadership, including Jan, Dr. Dick Hamann (Vice President for IT and Interim VP of Student Affairs), and President McGee."

There is a long "to do" list for adding an athletic program. Hiring a coach, recruiting student-athletes, securing gear and creating a schedule are just a few. Esser will begin the search for a coach and hopes to have someone on board by the end of the spring semester.
